For a fee, Tumblr is delivering ad-free browsing “from anywhere in the world.” Tumblr noted in a blog post that users may “Enjoy the same effervescent Tumblr you know and love (yes, including mobile) without the interruption of ads.” The ad-free experience is $4.99 a month, or $39.99 if you pay for the entire year ahead of time. If you’re a regular Tumblr user, it’s the equivalent of four months for free. To sign up, go to Account Settings on your desktop, click “Go Ad-Free,” and select either the $4.99 monthly or $39.99 yearly payment option. To manage your membership, go to “Ad-Free Browsing” in the future. It will automatically renew each month or year.
After that, “you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite blogs and posts without any bothersome advertising getting in the way.” This is an opt-in benefit; Tumblr will not force anyone to join up, and you can continue to enjoy a free, ad-supported experience if you want. Tumblr extended its Post+ premium membership option to all US users in September of last year, allowing artists to charge $1.99, $3.99, $5.99, or $9.99 for access to their work. Tumblr now has approximately 544 million blogs in 18 different languages.
